Semester Project: Different Yet the Same

Through out this course, we've been studying art and how women have been portrayed since the middle ages. I have always been interested in the style of painting and how it has progressed. However I wanted to comment on the fact that although the style of art has changed drastically over time, the view of women hasn't really changed fundamentally.

My painting is one image that has 4 different styles of painting in chronological order.

 - On the left most side, I painted in the style of the middle ages, flat, no depth or perspective.

- Next, I imitated the style of the renaissance in that the image has more perspective, and it is easier to tell just what is the subject of the painting.

- Next, I painted in the impressionist style, concentrating on light and color and the brush strokes.

- And finally, I worked with the abstraction/ modernism style of painting using single colors and thick outlines, giving you guys the general gist of the subject yet not worrying about the perspective and shading etc.

Thank you to Jessica Sabeh for modelling and for Anthony Perna for brainstorming and helping me come up with this idea.

  1. I thought it was really interesting how each section of the painting represented a different part of the artistic eras we learned about in class. You did a really good job in highlighting each section with the techniques and styles that were prominent during that time period.
